Key hole treatment in urology

KEY-HOLE SURGERY [LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY] FOR KIDNEY PROBLEMS

The term ‘laparoscopy’ is derived from Greek and is composed of the ancient Greek word ‘λαπάρα’(lapara) which means ‘tummy’, and ‘σκοπώ’(skopo) which means ‘to look’. Meaning to look inside the tummy.

Many traditional urologic surgical procedures require large incisions with lengthy hospitalization and recovery. Minimally invasive surgery, also often known as laparoscopic or keyhole surgery to patients, has recently been developed in the field of urologic surgery with the advancement of engineering and computer technologies.

During the procedure first the abdomen is filled with carbon-dioxide gas by inserting needle into the abdomen. So that the abdomen is distended creating space to work inside. A small telescope with built-in magnification mechanism is attached to camera is passed inside the abdomen by a 10 cm cut in the skin to see structures within the abdomen on a monitor. A variety of long, thin surgical instruments placed through approximately 3-5 incisions (each of which is usually no larger than a 10cm in size), the surgeon is able to perform minimally invasive surgery for a variety of urologic diseases and problems.

Laparoscopy offers a number of advantages to the patient compared to traditional open surgery. These include:

  • Less pain which limits the need for pain medication
  • Smaller incisions and better cosmetic results
  • Shorter hospital stay and faster recovery
  • Less intra/post-operative complications, such as blood loss, surgical site infections, incisional hernias etc.
  • Faster return to work and everyday life
